Starting last week discussions arose from multiple different sources about the popular developer tools platform GitHub possibly being acquired by Microsoft.
According to a Bloomberg report, Microsoft and GitHub have agreed to an acquisition. The deal could be announced as soon as Monday according to Bloomberg. Currently it’s still unclear what the price is Microsoft will pay for Github, although it was last valued at $2 Billion.
Business Insider also began reporting on the possible acquisition on Friday June 1st.
After previous cofounder Chris Wanstrath made the decision to step down, GitHub has been searching for a new CEO since August 2017.
Bloomberg also reported, “GitHub lost $66 million over three quarters in 2016 and remains in the red. GitHub was attracted to a deal with Microsoft in part because of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.”
I believe this acquisition to be a smart move by Microsoft.
GitHub is a developers go to paradise with so many projects and open source code, and Microsoft adding this to the list of great products they already own would not only create an even greater developer community for Microsoft, but place developers who are already members of and contributors of GitHub in reach of Microsoft for current or future hire.
