Lightyear announced they would unveil a prototype of the first long-range, self-charging solar electric car called Lightyear One on June 25th in the Netherlands.

According to a press release, the proof of concept car called Lightyear One will be Lightyear’s first concrete step towards the mission of making clean mobility available for everyone, everywhere.

Lightyear @lightyear_cars recently posted to Twitter: “Less than 2 days left before we unveil the very first driving prototype of Lightyear One! Make sure to tune into our livestream on June 25, 05:40 AM CEST →”

Lightyear One is a solar electric vehicle designed to maximize solar and battery range.

Since two of the biggest drawbacks of electric cars are range and charging limitations, Lightyear has redesigned the concept from the ground up, with their solar-electric solution. The Lightyear One can be confidently driven into places without a normal electric car charging infrastructure. The model provides the ability to be charged up to 400km overnight with an ordinary power socket. This approach by Lightyear gives drivers the freedom to take the car almost anywhere.

Lightyear One is a 4-wheel drive car that is designed to go for long ranges and periods of time without plugging up to a cable.

Depending on the usage, a fully charged battery alone has a range of 600-800 kilometers. When cable charging is needed, the Lightyear One’s energy efficiency allows a charge two to three times faster than any other electric car on the market. With optimized aerodynamics, light weight, and four independent in wheel motors, Lightyear One delivers torque with very high efficiency, and makes the most of the energy it produces.

Here is some information from Lightyear’s website, which has a brief overview of their history, team and mission.

Lightyear One Solar Electric Car

Lightyear uses the domain name Lightyear.one as their main website. This makes sense as the domain Lightyear.com is being used by an independent film and music entertainment company. Using this domain reminds me of another recent startup story where the company was using the domain Block.one, but recently acquired Voice.com. It also reminds me that as the internet continues to grow, that more and more new companies will continue to use new domain extensions.

I have been wishing for a car like the Lightyear One to come out for a while.

I believe that it’s brilliant to combine the current advances of electric vehicle battery charging with a second source of power derived from the Sun. This means your vehicle will charge while you’re driving through the city, or across the country on a road trip. I created a YouTube video speculating how I believed this was the future of electric cars back in January of 2019. Please give it a watch and subscribe to my channel.
